Multiply the denominator by the whole number. Then, add the numerator to the product of whole number and denominator. The sum will be the numerator and the denominator will still be the denominator.

4 x 1 = 4

4 + 3 = 7

====> 7/4

Yes, multiply the denominator by the whole number, and add this to the numerator. Take this result and write it over the denominator. So since 1*4=4, and this plus 3 is 7, the answer here is 7/4.

The reason this works is because a whole number can always be written as the product of itself and another number, over that number. For example, 5 equals 5/1, or 10/2, or 15/3, or 20/4, or 25/5, etc. So 1 and 3/4 is the same as adding 1 + 3/4, which is the same as adding 4/4 and 3/4, making 7/4.

You have the number 1 3/4 and to make it a mixed number you multiply the whole number 1 by the denominator and add the numerator. Therefore it would go this way 1 x 4+3=7. Then you place the original denominator 4 to make it 7/4. To make it easier. put in a formula WN x D+N / D

1 and 3/4 equals 7/4. You can either think of 1 as 4/4+3/4=7/4. Or, you can say:4 times 1 =4+3=7. And put your original denominator as the improper fractions denominator.

you r right! you multiply the number (1 in this case) by the denominator (4) and you add the numerator (3). 4*1 + 3 and you will get 7. This will be the numerator or the improper fraction. You then keep the deniominator and you improper fraction will be 7/4.

Have fun!
