If its a matter of expense, gravel is still cheaper because you cannot use beach or comemrcial sand for fish tanks, you have to go for Aragonite or Silica and both are expensive.

It depends on where you but it. Some stores sell both at varying prices. It's a matter of how much you are willing to spend. Some gravels claim to clean the water but they don't also with outdoor sand, don't count on it, it might have germs or parasites from everyone and everything playing in it and peeing in it. Even if it's from a river bank or near a tree. However, c makes a good piont. Sand is easier to clean as it packs tighter together, prventing food particles from hiding up in there. But sand does not come in color like gravel, but the natural look is very beautiful as well. Your best bet is Sand i think. Hope this helps.

Well is it a matter of expense, you can always go pick gravel or rocks from various places or find a sand pile where ever they are working laying brick or building new houses.
Around here they are all about the same depending on how much you are looking to get. A bag of sand is around $3.50 a bag of tank gravel is $2.99. The sand is a 25# sack, and the gravel is aquarium gravel.
I would worry more about which is easier in a fresh water tank to care for. Sand tends to be sucked into filters and cloud up a tank during water changes. It is also more difficult to clean with a gravel siphone since it tends to Pick up the sand as well as the waste.

You can get a bag of sand box sand or any sand at home depot 50 pounds for a couple bucks. gravel figure $5= 5 pounds. go to http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/sand.php this has a guide on using sand in the fish tank.
I have sand and I love it. I hated syphoning out the gravel all the time. sand you just move the siphon 1/2 in. over and it picks it up.

In my area gravel is generally cheaper unless you use a bulk sand from the home improvement store. These sands can work fine or can be sand thats unsuitable for fish.

You need to be very careful with sand. If it has any amount of depth, it needs to be stirred every day or it will develop pockets of anaerobic gasses, which, when they release into your tank, will be toxic to your fish. This is why most people use gravel. It has enough spaces in it that the water can flow thru it enough to keep it aerated.

Just do alot of research first....sand from a hardware store is not sand from a pet store. Of course different fish will accept different things...so look at you fish choice first. A cheap floor costs more in the long run if you have to keep buying those pricey fish!
