Just helped a friend in Washington last year.

The most important question is....are there kids involved? You'll have to have a lawyer with kids, and likely without if there's a bit of money/house/family business involved.

The lawyer will give you a thirty-minute consultation first. Don't be dumb in that 30 minutes! Read up on Washington divorce law on the Internet before you get in there so you aren't starting from square one and you maximize the time.

You will get a lawyer, draft the papers, and serve him. Then, he will have 30 days to prepare a response - with his lawyer. After that, you will submit a financial statement from each side to the court. The judge will ask for any other information that is pertinent. If kids are involved, mediation will be required to establish a family visitation plan.

The cost will depend on how much documentation and office action is required to get into court, but it isn't cheap. Good luck. You may E-mail me with more.

As a washington state divorce lawyer the threshold question is: kids or no kids? if it is the former:

1. (ie no kids) you have three required docs: petition for dissolution, finding of fact, and finally Decree of dissolution.

2. (ie w/kids) you tack on three more necessary documents parenting plan, childsupport order, child support worksheets.

Those are the fundament legal documents you need. Each county has slightly different procedures and the first divorce i did (which is almost 10 years now) took some messing around with proper filing procedures.

You CAN do it yourself. the question is messing around with the details of the procedure. you will spend a minimum of a days worth of time mucking in the details and possibly 2 if kids are involved. if you really are hurting for cash and have lots of time on your hands get your bum down to the courthouse and they will have a packet for purchase at $35. if you value your time i would suggest my own automated service but it comes with the safety of lawyer review. just email me at: wadivorcelawyer (. at) yahoo dot com. (yes i'm avoiding harvesters so that email i just typed is not a typo!!!) or my website at www. . StarkLawOffices . dott com.
