I hate these kinds of questions. Not everyone talks to strangers on the net you know? My little sister, all she wants to do on the internet is play games, that's it. She never talks to anyone. Why can't you trust your own kids? What kind of parents are you?
Keep in mind though, I'm not saying that NO ONE talks to strangers, there are some that do, but definitely not MOST.
Edit: to that one user who said nobody under 16 should have one, too late. I'm 15 and I have a laptop, I'm on it right now, but I'm not stupid enough to talk to some stranger, give them my picture/e-mail address/phone number/full name/city I live in etc. Adults are really idiotic these days.

I'm not a parent, but if I had a child, there will be no TVs or computers in their rooms.
The computer should be in a family room/living room where the parents can monitor the computer activity.
Too many disgusting, sick perverts out there pretending to be children!

I'm not a parent.... I don't think anyone should have a computer in the room where they spend the most time, especially not where they sleep. they electrical energy is VERY bad for you.... My friend's baby was born with cancer because she was perpetually on the computer while pregnant..... that (should) make us think! He's about three and cancer/tumor free, but his development was stunted because of it.
If it comes down to that, they can have a computer in their room, if it has no connection to the Internet.... do you have any idea what kind of crap ANYONE can post, and ANYONE can have access to???? it's insane! our culture is devolvign at a most prolific rate.....

You know, its not just what your kid would do, its also what their friends will do. When I was 14 I let my friend on my computer and she ended up in a lot of trouble, getting into certain chat rooms and giving away too much information. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong since I wasn't personally doing it. The temptations can be too great, keep the computer in a public part of the house and you avoid all of it.

Yes, its no different than having it in a living room. But if the kid has had bad things happen on the computer than dont put it in a room. I would'nt reccommend it for kids under 10.
