The following is an excerpt from an article at
http://wwf.org.au/news/sydney-to-send-message-to-the-world-on-global-warming/
"In a world first, Sydney will turn off its lights for one hour at 7.30pm on Saturday March 31, 2007 as a major step towards reducing the city's greenhouse gas pollution."
"With the support of The City of Sydney and the NSW Government, Earth Hour will be the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions by 5% in 2007."
Could you power down all of your appliances and turn off your lights for one full hour? How much energy do you think would be saved if all of the US powered down at the same time?

I originally saw this on the news, and they did leave the street lights and other emergency and/or medical-related appliances running.
So, what night is good for you? Let's do it!!

No biggie! We could do it during the day and all go outside and read a book for an hour, or play a sport or something! You could save energy and gain knowledge or lose weight all at the same time!

I don't know if everybody could do it... there are some weak ones out there.... but it would be sooooo cool. not only would we be cutting expenditures, but we would actually be able to see the stars!!!!!!
i don't see how the first answer is related... I have no knowledge of anything of the kind after 9/11.... anyway, it was all a stunt so lame-a** bush could get what he wants.... so stupid... and now we're stuck in limbo. we can't pull out, and we're going NOWHERE. if we had an Aussie govornment, we might, but no.... we've got a lame excuse for a president, a waste of life, crack-piping idiot

It's a gimmick. The power needed to restart off-sets any savings.
