I'm 19 and have cervical dysplasia. My gyno told me about 4 months ago that if in 6 months, the dysplasia gets worse and becomes cancer, I would need a hysterectomy. Can someone tell me if there are any other options? What are the effects? What is the procedure? Anything you can tell me, please let me know. I would like mostly first hand or second hand experienced knowledge but if you'd like to offer me a good website, that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks.

Have you had any other testing? How long have you had the dysplasia. I am 37 and have had abnormal paps for about 17 years. They have ranged from mildly abnormal to severe high-grade dysplasia. Besides my personal history, I also worked for an OB/GYN for 8 years. I have been told that I probably will have to have a hysterectomy someday, but not right now. Look into other treatments first, (colposcopy, LEEP, Cone Biopsy, hysteroscopy, Freezing the cells).

I find it really strange that a doctor would suggest a hysterectomy at 19. Once you have a hysterectomy, that is it, you begin menopause. A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, so you will not be able to have children. Which is why it's usually used only as a last resort. If your doctor insists this is your only option, I would run, not walk, to get a second opinion.

Email me if you have other questions, or just want to talk. I've been there and it is a very scary place to be!!

I would definitely recommend getting a second opinion and even a 3rd and a 4th to be on the safe side.

A hysterectomy is where they take out your uterus and sometimes at the same time they take out ovaries (what they call an oophorectomy) and fallopian tubes.

It can cause a woman to be menopausal. It can also cause nerve damage for some women because of the nerves that get cut when organs are removed.

They can deal with dysplasia thru cryotherapy, cone surgery, LEEP.

Pls get another opinion but preferably not from someone in the same office of the dr you use as your gynecologist.

There are several treatment options available for cervical dysplasia. The most common options are:

*Observation. Your doctor will observe the abnormal cells to see if they will disappear on their own.
*LEEP. Your doctor will perform the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure to remove abnormal tissue.
*Cryocautery. Your doctor will freeze the cervix to remove abnormal tissue.
*Laser Surgery. Your doctor will perform surgery to vaporize the abnormal tissue. In this procedure, little or no damage occurs to surrounding tissue.

Only after going through these options may hysterectomy be suggested, but if he finally has to perform one, i suggest you talk with him about freezing your ovules so in the future you may have the chance to become a mother by a surrogate mother, perhaps.

From what you said your doctor said that the hysterectomy would happen if you ended up with cancer. So you are not going to have one unless you develop a life threatning disease. I would keep up with your doctor apointments and I would also ask to be referred to a endo, cancer specialist, to see if they think you will develop cancer. In order for them to think you may have cancer would mean that they found pre cancerous cells. You need to ask your doctor if this is the case.

Get a second opinion. You should be able to have laser treatment to get rid of the bad cells. Do not wait, make an appointment immediately Good luck.

I would get a second opinion, if I were you.
