Okay, so I'm doing a 5-8 minute expository speech on 'The Art of Tattooing.' Tattooing interests me alot, thus the topic. Anyway, I have been typing up my speech [it has to be memorized!!!!] and it's WAY too long. So I deleted the health risks part, because I'm encouraging tattoos, and speaking about the art, not the risks. I also deleted aftercare. So I have a lot on history, styles, and process. I really don't know how to make it shorter!! Should I delete some history details, or some details on styles? I need help!! It has to be memorized by Monday the 2nd!!!

I suggest that you include everything, because you will forget 1/3 of it and there you go, there is your 5-8 min speech.

You will only remember what interests you anyway. A speech is not like an essay, you will be able to make your points with far less words.

There is no way you can remember all that verbatim.

Don't shorten the paper.

First of all you need a 3 x 5 card. Your speech should have the following - 1) State your purpose 2) Introduce the topic with a joke, quote, or something else interesting to put your audience on point 3) Organize the body of your speech with 3-5 facts, AND examples. Keep in mind, however, that expository speeches should include evidence of research (names, dates, places, any comments made in local news, or other media) 4) Finally, the conclusion should summarize the major points of your speech. It should emphasize your thesis (intro statement) and briefly summarize how you have proven it in the body of your speech. The audience should feel enlightened and thoroughly satisfied that you have developed the topic. Although you may include quotations as you summarize, close the speech by reinforcing your points with your own memorable words.
'When it's all over and done - your 3x5 card should have brief information that should be easy for you to memorize.

Couple points in your presentation - 1) speak loud and clear- vary your tone (rise and fall) Put life into your words. 2) Hands out of pocket and don't rock back and forth. 3) PLEASE try not to say repetitious words such as "like", uh, hm, etc. 4) Take a deep breath - look at your audience (over the top of their heads is good - most people can't look others eye-ball-2-eye-ball. lol 4) Don't rush. Give your words their own time on the 'seesaw" that's what I tell my students. Don't let the words rush on top of each other and you speak so fast that you keep going down, down, down until no one can hear you. Ok to use hands - just don't over use. No gum or candy. Think that's about it. Enjoy it - and have fun. Oh - you DO need to include the health issue part and after care. You don't have to go into great details, but it is important that when you present 'facts' to people that involve issues where heath matters and concerns are present about needles and all the reprocussions behind that (HIV/AIDS) you HAVE to mention that.

Your best bet is to focus ONLY on what point you want to make. Do you want to explain the art? Do you want to convince someone that tattooing is an art? Are you trying to get your audience to respect tattooing? Do you need the history in order to make your point? A good expository essay always knows 3 things: 1. The point you want to make, 2. Who the audience is -- do they already have some knowledge about the topic? No knowledge about the topic? Are they skeptical about tattooing as art? Might they be interested already and just need your exposition to "move" them to think about tattoos in a different light? 3. What tone will work best with this audience? Sometimes humor is effective; sometimes you can just present the facts and they will be the best argument.

Remember, you want to keep them interested, but there's no way you can tell them everything. So, think about what you would want to know -- not necessarily everything about tatooing -- but everything necessary to decide to agree with you that tattoos/tattooing is art.

Hope this helps.
