If you can role play with him in a way where he agrees with what the bullies are saying, they will lose interest in him.
For example,
A bully insults his shoes, he just says "OK" and leaves it there. The bully hasn't gotten a rise out of him, but the bully is not sure what that means.
Tell your son the trick is to make the bullies think he doesn't care. Its all in pretending really well.

If your child is being bullied, report it to his teacher, and the principal. Do not teach your son to insult the people that may beat him up after school. It's not fair, but bullies are part of life and an insult won't make them stop, it will make the situation worse. Adult intervention may be required, notify the school.

Question: What kind of school does he go to? These days you cant be too careful. He might end up getting beat up badly.
If he is in an okay school then suggest that he handle it as WashoeLisa's suggested.
If it continues then I agree with Ashley D. Go to the principles office and request that the principle contact the bullies parents, all of them, and tell the parents what is going on. This generally works if the parents are the kind that once they are aware they get their kids in line.
If the parents are not the kind that respond then let the principle know that you will be contacting the police to file a report on the bullying. The parents know that this will result in a court date for them.
Also I would suggest that you enroll your son in Tia Quan Do lessons. It will install confidence in him, and if needs be later on he will be able to defend himself. Generally he will learn to avoid confrontation with whomever, and adopt peace first.
Hope this helps.

um, why would you want him to insult the bullies and possibly provoke more bullying? christ, you should be trying to stop it by going to the principal or something so these kids dont just keep harrasing your son. besides, more often than not if the kid being bullied just ignores it, the bullies get bored because they arent getting the results they want and move on.

Why do you want him to add fuel to the fire? Go ahead, have him make insults to the bullies and maybe they won' t beat your son up to bad.

At 8 years old, wouldn't it be better if he learned to tell them to "back off, don't make me hurt you." Then if they don't, for him to break their noses. Once done he should have no problem with the bullies.

he shouldnt insult them back, try coercern basically telling them that what they say to him is offending him because most kids your sons age do not understand how offensive some things they say to other children, if that doesnt work he should stand up for himself and fight back and tell his teachers and principal(s) at his school and yourself about his problem.

what I told my bullies was that if they took me on, they may beat me, but they were going to be the one I would do serious damage to!
strangely? they never took me on!

No, because it will only make it worse. Trust me.
How about intervening with the parents?
