HA! I haven't heard him called that in years.
I was 14 years old when Elvis did his first record for Sun. Of course, all we girls fell in love with him immediately. He was glorious!!
When he sang, he moved - a lot.... including his hips. Today, that is not unusual but in the 50's, it was outrageous and got his records banned in several cities and when he appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, they were only allowed to shoot him from the waist up. All that hip or "pelvic" movement was considered obscene and would incite all of us teenagers to run out and start having sex or something. So, someone on some radio show referred to him as "Elvis, the Pelvis" and it stuck for a long time.
You must understand that in the 50's, most parents didn't talk to their kids about sex - and acted like THEY never had it. Where I was raised, there were "girls who did it" and "girls who didn't".. The ones that did were very, very few but everyone knew who they were. It was considered disgraceful and those girls had a lot of company but no boy ever took them anywhere (if you get my drift). Those who didn't - just didn't.
My girlfriends and I were firmly convinced that if we ever did, our parents would know it immediately and the shame would be unbearable. So you can imagine how the "grown ups" thought about this beautiful young man and his jerking hips and the effect he had on their daughters. HAHA!!!

When Elvis first appeared on TV etc. his dance moves included a lot of gyrations of the pelvis. This was new and unsettling to some people. It also gained him a lot of fame and notoriety. By todays standards it was very tame but at the time it was quite risque.

When Elvis Presley performed, he wiggled his pelvis in a suggestive way that was frowned on by older people, but adored by his fans. Hence the nickname.
