The one and ONLY reason i don't want to give up the ciggies is because of the weight gain side effect.......i'm already over weight... Any tips to achieve both..i think to tackle both at the same time might be too much too soon?

i'd say stop smoking first.......not an easy feat itself, but once you've cracked it you could add in a small exercise activity every time you would normally have a cigarette.

For example - you sit down with a cup of coffe to watch tv......do some bicep curls with the coffee jar - keeps your hands busy and mind distracted from the cigarette issue!!!!

I would say to give up smoking first. Actually, you can even do both at the same time. Start out with your diet. Perhaps, try to eat something healthy or healthier everyday, it can be like your breakfast the first day, for example, if you're use to eating fatty foods, try to eat fruits and cereal instead. Then on the 2nd day, change your lunch to a salad. Or you can even do the switching in a week. Do it at your own phase but take note that you also have to start EXERCISE. If you're always parking closer to the main entrance, try parking your car farther thay way it can give some time to walk. Baby steps. You can do it. Good luck.

The cigarettes are far more harmful to your health than the extra weight, so it makes sense to deal with that first. If possible, see a doctor to help you with quitting---the nicotine patch can really help.
Trying to do both (quit smoking and lose weight) may be too stressful for you, and you may end up failing at both. Quit first, maybe incorporate a 20-30 min walk every day,and once you are smoke-free for a few months, then get serious about losing weight.

Statistically smoking is the more dangerous activity. 50% of all smokers will die of smoking related disease. I would try and give up smoking and try as hard as you can to not gain too much weight while doing it. At least you only have to give up smoking once. Unfortunately you almost have to give up eating too much as a daily battle with yourself.

Realistically you need to be an ex-smoker for at least a year before you can say it is behind you. The package therefore might be a long slow process.

I wish you the very best of luck.

I'd suggest you quit smoking first, simply because weight loss requires exercise and if you are a smoker exercise is likely to be more exhausting. You will need healthy lungs, giving up smoking is always hard, if you have been smoking for years it is even harder. Don't rush things though, whilst you are giving up smoking work on eating heallthily. Then gradually begin to exercise as the process of giving up smoking seems to be progressing nicely. Remember not to overdo things, only increase the amount of exercise when you are ready, and maintain a balanced and healthy diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and drink plenty of water. Hope that helped.
Good luck.

I know people who've done both, quit smoking first, and others who've deited first. Actually, they used them as rewards. "I lost 50 pounds, so now I'm going to give up smoking." I personally couldn't do both at the same time, but if I could do one, then I'd have enough confidence to do the other.

Catch 22.
It's a tall order.
All you could do is try both at the same time.
In the event that it does not work, focus on your priority.
Deal with that first.
That way you will have some achievement.
Then follow on the second.
Good Luck!

cigarettes first - it's true that you eat more when you stop smoking as your sense of taste improves and you haven't got the nicotine to surpress your appetite but if you're aware of this and start exercising it will help.

if you got for a nicotine replacement like mint gum that will help you beat the cravings and if your mouth is all minty you'll want other foods less.

if you stop smoking you'll be able to exercise lots easier as you will be getting more oxygen in your body and your breathing will improve plus you'll have extra money to go to the gym, swimming baths etc.

good luck with it - won't be easy but will definately be worth it xxx

(eta. it's also really tempting to keep putting off giving up cigarettes and making excuses for not doing it (been there!!!) you just have to go for it and don't be too harsh on yourself if you do gain a little bit of weight) x

Give up the smokes. Learn deep breathing techniques. Drink more water. Eat healthy(no junk food) more fruits and veggies, cut the starches. Take long walks and take up yoga.
