Democracy was a process of electing leaders to govern and share the views of the people. Do the elected leaders hide behind the term democracy as a means of excercing their views and not of the people they represent?

By the time it comes to elections, the choices have been made. Unfortunately, the voting process is now a matter of selecting the lesser of the two evils. We are not part of the process. We are tricked into thinking we choose our leaders.

The people who stand by the election process need only to refer back a few years when Dubya ended up being RE-elected!! SOMEBODY voted for that dipstick. And we're all paying for it.

I think there are some honest people who would do a good job as a world leader but we have yet to find them. I think young people who want to go into politics should learn ethics and to stand up for what they believe in.
Plus, someone who is charismatic and shares the same thoughts as the people.
I do agree with the democracy= choosing oppressor because I can see where you are coming from from the oppressing part. Some people feel they have no say in government.
The only way is to try to get more honest people in politics, if that'll ever happen

You had to ask? I thought that was a given at this point. But it shall only persist as long as the people allow it. Ultimately, power rests with the people, and they have the power to change the status quo. With our government gravitating more and more toward corporate control, it's only a matter of time until that change is instigated.

In the end, I think a major overhaul of our government will be needed. For one thing, a method for recalling any elected federal offical needs to be imbedded in the Constitution so the people can through direct vote, not through agents (e.g. governors) or long cumbersome processes (e.g. impeachment), rid themselves of morons like George W. Bush before they have time to do too much damage. Second, an amendment needs to be promulgated which forces term limits upon federally elected office holders. We don't want career politicos who become too chummy with the industries and agencies they are elected to oversee. Thirdly, we need to enact an amendment which mandates payment for political campaigns directly out of the public treasury, with limits as to how much each candidate can spend. Once they reach the limit, tough. No more spending will be permittted either from public or private coffers. That will level the playing field as far as federal office seekers are concerned. It will also help minimize corporate influence on American politics. Governments are elected to represent real people, not faux people. I'm sure that all of these have pros and cons, but at this point, I can only see that the pros surely outweigh the cons.

I believe that there is more to the process than that. C'mon, bush and kerry as our only candidates for the Commander in Chief of this country. Have we been so lax in our participation that we now have those choices to make. I think that if we have taken the position that allows us to have such a choice to make then we should get involved to ensure that there is a choice of candidates that will ensure the continuation of our democracy and the upholding of our rights and freedoms of the constitution regardless of political party or affilliation. The best choice might be determined on the beliefs of a person as opposed to the party's belief in the management of our country and the manner it was designed by the original documents. They were very good for over 200 years and only became under dispute with the interpretation and modification of its contents. Would it not make sense to go back to the point where effective implementation and enforcement of rules to provide protection as well as freedoms. If it worked for so long it has to have merit.

the political process is a well thought out process, as they have teams of researchers pollsters etc, continually monitoring the people and the political process, and when they advise a politician to vote a certain way he had better do so or he won't be in office long, very few people will contact their Representatives to tell them what they want , while the big boys who own corporations etc, are very vocal, and they also put money into the game, where so few people are even interested in what their Representatives are doing it is shameful.yet many will complain about the laws passed or ??
how many people out there know any thing about AIPAC IT IS THE RICHEST AND LARGEST LOBBY ON CAPITOL HILL and they are continually brow beating our representatives fro more money weapons etc, for Israel, and they have managed to gain control of our new;s media and our monetary system "the Federal Reserve" so now our politicians dare not to obey their commands else they will be impeached or not elected, they have the power to do this and have did it many times in the past, even the premier of Israel made the statement that the Jew's owned America, and as long as our people are so lazy and stupid they will continue to own us , and the sad part is they haven't paid a dime for us nor fired a shot.yet it is estimated that all of our income tax's go to the Zionist???+no we are no longer a demoracy , we are litteral slaves to the Zionist and Israel.

Changing only the face of our oppressors. The international financiers that control Western governments remain the same, creating an environment where working people are given the illusion of a high standard of living but have to work ever harder to satisfy the greed of the purveyors of goods and services.

Democracy, accountability and transparency are all fine notions wedged into theory rather than practice. For democracy to work, there must be differences to choose between at election time. It's pointless going on.

No, democracy is a process of making collective decisions.

Only a democratic republic uses that collective voting process to elect leaders who govern us. Pure democracy does not.

During the next election you'll choose between Brown or Cameron. Out of 56,000,000 people that's your choice. Don't get carried away.
