As of 1/23/07 you need a passport when traveling by air. As of January 23, 2008 you will need one when traveling by land or sea. (US to/from Mexico travel)

Just get a passport. They are good for 10 years and you need a passport to cross an international boarder, regardless of how you cross it.

Yes, it can take weeks but if you are traveling within a week or so, take your tickets down to the passport offices and they can issue it within hours. You can also pay for expedited servce and it only takes around 10 days.

If you are travelling to Mexico by a car, no one ask you for the passport. However, when you are returniing to U.S., you have to show the passport as U.S. Immigration is strict as compared to Mexico.

You have until the beginning of next year to get a passaport as required to travel across the border into Mexico. Right now you don't have to have one but I have had one for around two years. I find it is easier to have one when traveling. Have a safe trip.

ALWAYS carry a passport from now on, you can be completely out of luck without it -- even driving to Canada requires one now. They are very very strict about the new laws, so to be safe, carry it with you any time you travel out of the U.S. Mine only took 3 weeks to get back once I applied, not bad.
