The rule of thumb is ........always before 10:00 o'clock am and after sundown. That way the high sun heat doesn't suck up the moisture.
The matter of how long depends on how much precipitation you receive.

the best time to water lawns is in the morning between 5am - 10am for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Its better to water for longer periods of time every 3-4 days a week. Doing so will soak the roots good and prevent alot of diseases. If you water at night the water sits on the surface and creates such things as mold and mildew. Another disease is brown patch. This can take over and kill a lawn if not teated.

The typical response is in the morning or the evening, and they would be right. But the BEST time is in the morning. This allows for some evaporation to take effect, which is a good thing. If water is allowed to sit for too long a period, it promotes the growth of mold in the soil, which is bad for the lawn.

I always used AM and watched my weather to find when the least wind was blowing and determined it to be 4 am and that is when I watered. Not at night, grows bugs and other things you don't want. I would water for an hour in each setting then again in 4 days if it is hot. The am will help the grass from getting stressed in the heat of the day.

Depends, but technically the morning is better that way all moisture dry's by night and you dont have a problem with fungus. Also I dont care what anyone says, grass can be watered any time of day. I do it all the time. Real reason you shouldnt water in the hot sun is evaporation.

in the morning or evening. DO NOT run them during the heat of the day. It could put your grass into shock and kill it. Also, if it is really hot then some water evaporates before it can soak in. You are wasting water that way. I would probably run 20-40 minutes depending on how much rain you have gotten.

Early morning is best. Evening moisture attracts lawn-eating bugs and midday watering results in immediate evaporation of most of the water.
