I would definitely get a second opinion. I have IBS and the pain is very severe when I have an attack and before I started taking fiber I had severe diarrhea almost every day. It started when I was 22 and I know how you feel since I didn't leave the house for 6 months at first. If you don't have diarrhea and/or constipation most likely there is another condition or issue you are dealing with. Anxiety and stress can cause bad stomach conditions also. If you are thinking about it every day you might be making worse. You can try taking Citrucel it will not cause gas. It completely stopped my attacks and it does wonders for a upset stomach. If I was you I would see another doctor about it.

I am sorry to hear this. I feel your pain. I think it is possible for an IBS sufferer to only have bloating and gas- it varies for different people. How was your IBS diagnosed? Because if IBS is to be diagnosed correctly it should be diagnosed by exclusion, because there is no test yet to definitely test for definite IBS. This means you have to get bloods tests etc to check for other things (such as celiac, etc). Then if nothing shows it is a good idea to get a referal to see a specialist and you might need a colonoscopy or similar procedure- this is where they look inside with a camera to see if they can find anything- it is more accurate than just an ultrasound, which you could get before seeing the specialist. Anyway if you haven't had all these tests I recommend you look into it.
If you have already had these tests and definitely have IBS then I am not sure what comes next, but I have heard that there is a tablet you can buy from the supermarket / chemist called Mintec. I haven't tried it but have been recommended it by other people. Also while IBS isn't curable, it can still be improved by healthy diet, maybe see a dietician / specialist to see what they recommend.
I hope your condition improves.

I would recommend having an evaluation with a gastroenterologist about this issue if you haven't already.

As to whether or not someone can have IBS by just having bloating and gas only it's possible but usually one must have one or both constipation and diarrhea.

If a gastroenterologist has diagnosed you with IBS I would recommend getting another opinion and preferably from someone that does not share the same office as that of the dr you currently see.
