The bacteria that make milk turn into buttermilk also break down solid waste particles. You can also flush down yoghurt or sour cream for similar results.

Buttermilk has absolutely noting in it to keep a septic in shape. Its a false statement.

There is plenty of bacteria and enzymes in a septic tank. Those products sold are a waste of money.

The thing that destroys bacteria most in a septic system is if your Laundry water containing chlorine and detergent is piped directly into the septic. What should be done is a seperate pit about 4 x 4 feet deep and filled with crushed rock and into that drain your laundry water. Then your septic will not have the chlorine that kills bacteria dumped into it.

A properly installed septic system, even in clay soil, will work well if the bacteria in the tank isnt killed off by a chemical such as chlorine or detergents in quantity.

I am amazed that such companies that sell septic tank bacteria increasers are still in business and that tales of using buttermilk still remain alive in this scientific age.

Unless it is bacteria, nothing. Bacteria is what makes a septic tank work. If you kill the bacteria with too many household chemicals such as bleach, ammonia and grease/oil it will no longer work.
