the thing with zone alarm as well as all symantec products is that they consume so much resourses. if you have a pretty hefty system then it's not much of an issue. But avast is a really good antivirus and uses about a quarter or so of the resources as zone alarm. Kerio firewall is the firewall I personally use as well as Avast Pro. I've seen Norton in action and haven't ever been impressed with it. Here is a link to show you the top ten antivirus's but i can't find a link to show the top ten firewalls

Zone Alarm Pro and Avast have had incompatibility problems for years.
For your Anti-Virus you could use... ActiveVirusShield (Always use only 1 A-V)
I like the FREE, AOL ActiveVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. ActiveVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, ActiveVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test results are here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
ActiveVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Updates many times per day to detect new malware.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Dump the Avast, ZoneAlarm is superior. You may have to re-install it once you cleared the Avast, but you won't regret it. Symantec or Norton's is another excellent security system, but running two firewalls at once only serves to confuse your system and you'll be without protection. www.zonealarm.com will offer you a more detailed explanation plus provide you with free tech support.

Go ahead and use them both together. I get the same thing here and I have yet to have a problem. Been doing that for over 5 years without any problem. As always you mileage may vary.
