Well if you don't know how to drive properly then you would get in the way...personally I drive better in reverse than forward.

As you back in the rear wheels make less lateral movement than the front, so when you back into a space you can get in to a slot about the same width as the car, the only limitation is skill and mirrors. You can also see the corners with the mirrors, so you don't have to worry about the bumper hitting the side of the car next to you as you park.
It is essential for parking in tight spots.
Making it easier to leave is just the icing on the cake.

It gives the driver a clearer view of the parking lane when he/she pulls forward. Backing into a space takes some practice to make it smooth. Actually, its better if you can find a space that you can pull into normally and then drive up into the vacant space ahead.

When you hit someone you can inflict more damage when you are are backing up. That's one good thing. Another neat thing about backing up is that if you run over someone you will not have to see the blood and the gore. Finally, backing is cool because when you hit something hard your airbag might not go off, while when you hit something hard going forward the airbag always goes off. Always back up when you are in a bad mood and feel like inflicting damage--- that's the way I used to drive back when I had a drivers license.

To get out easier as it is sometimes difficult to see past the van or truck parked
on both sides. Also, if your car needs to be started--dead battery--it's easier if
you are facing outward. Just a matter of preference I guess.

It makes leaving a whole lot easier. For instance, if you're at the movies, a lot of people would not let you out that easy if you're backing out. You tend to have more power pulling out when you're backed in coz you see everything.

But when they are ready to go, they just put it in drive and away they go, out of your way. It sucks having to worry about such little things in your life, isn't it.
