First compare the two numbers. The one you are subtracting is larger, so your answer will be negative.

Now put the larger number on top and the smaller number on bottom. Make sure that the decimal points line up:
5.4567
- 4.7689

Starting at the right: 9 is bigger than 7, so borrow from the 6 and subtract 17-9 = 8

Next digit: 8 is bigger than 5 (remember we borrowed), so borrow 1 from the third digit: 15 - 8 = 7

Repeat... Your answer is 0.6878. But wait! The larger number was being subtracted from the smaller number, remember? So your REAL answer is -0.6878.

Or use a calculator. :-)

Whenever you add or subtract a decimal you are to line up the decimal points of the numbers and then perform the operation.

4.7689
- 5.4567
--------------
Now what I do would be to switch the numbers and add the negative sign because your answer will be less than 0

5.4567 - 4.7689= -0.6878

It's -0.6878. Put the 5.4567 on top and subtract 4.7689 under it. The answer is negative since the number being subtracted is larger.

First align decimals with their proper place value: units with units, hundredths with hundredths, thousands with thousandths.
But flip it to 5.4567-4.7689
5.4567
- 4.7689
----------------
0.6878
Now add (-) sign. So answer is 0.6878.
