The Check Engine Light :
1. Is mandated in the USA by the EPA
2. Alerts the driver that the ECM/ECU has detected an anomaly (or several anomalies depending on criteria contained in the engine management software).
3. Calls out the individual malfunction code(s) to help technicians correctly diagnose the malfunction.

Because most people would not know what to look for if there were guages for everything and modern engines are so compicated that you would need more guages than an aircraft carrier. The 'check engine' light gets people;s attention (because there is only 1) and tells them to get to a professional (because there is little you can do yourself without a shop full of electronic diagnostic equiptment.)

well ya kinda answered already,,,,some folks that cant take advice or follow the owners manual instructions that seem to have the most problems,,the most common reason Ive seen for the "C-E-L" are folks that cant seem to turn the key off before putting gas in the gas tank and or being sure the gas cap is secured before restarting,,there are vacume sensors that see no vacume and alerts the "ECM" that turns on the "Check Engine Light",many newer cars will turn it back off as soon as cap is secured

Because automakers wish to force you to return to the dealership for service. Now most better mechanics have the equipment to read the computer and determine what made the light come on. My car has always had the cel come on in the fall and winter. When my mechaic reads ithe says the O2 sensor is defective and occasionally at imspection time he replaces it. Since I trust my mechanic I believe him.

it is to let you know something is wrong with the system in your car .The computer in your car monitors several little devices on the engine, If one goes bad the check engine or check engine soon light will come on letting you know something is wrong and if you live in a state that has to have emissions every year it wont pass , you don,t have to take your car to the dealer your repairman close to your house will be able to read the codas and let you know what to replace ,, good luck

THAT ONE is easy big idiot lights are for idiots who need to see that umm feeling of power you know? It's like if you had a remote to a tv if the LED light wasn't there it wouldn't look as cool.

the real reason is to make people go to the dealerships to do the 30k / 60k /90k mile checkups... so they can charge you like $150. to turn it off.....
