It's still a part of the game, at least in the regular season BUT a lot of teams are deciding that that 20th Roster spot has to be given to somebody with some Hockey Skill, not a one dimensional enforcer.

Whether Hockey NEEDs fighting is debatable (and believe me we have in the last few weeks), but don't worry, it's not going anywhere right now.

Two different issues. Fighting in hockey is headed for extinction. It's gone from the playoffs, gone from international play, gone from most amateur hockey. Let's face it -- most people aren't going to take it seriously until fighting is elminated from the sport.

When that happens, the authorities will have to take strong actions to make sure stickwork and other activities doesn't compensate. And while they are at it, make hits to the head illegal and punishable by suspension. If an NBA player did the equivalent of Chris Simon did, he'd go broke paying the fine.

Bettman already announced that he has no intention of removing fighting, however he is trying to eliminate cheap shots. He said that if 2 guys agree to fight, let them, but if a Chris Simon goes around smacking people in the face with a stick, there will be consequences.

Fighting is still a huge part of the game. Fights are exciting and keep casual fans going to the games.
