UV light causes damage to cells. This canl be permanent but sometimes you will recover. Infrared will also cook the eye. If you get your retina too hot it won't recover.

Once of the things that can happen by starting into the sun to long is rod cell damage. In the rod cells in your eyes (the cells that detect the brightness of light) the mechanism for sensing photons is based on a negative signal. As your cells detect light, there is a protein known as transducin which is phosphorylated so it can no longer activate calcium channels. When the calcium channels close as a result of inactivated transducin, this signals to the brain that there is bright light. If there is too bright light, another protein called Beta-arrestin binds the phosphorylated transducin to further reduce the effects on the calcium channel. However, arresting usually binds permanently. If the exposure to extremely bright light, like the sun, extends for a long time, you rod cells may forget to to create new transducin, leading to decreased light sensitivity, and eventually blindness.
Also, the UV rays from the sun can potentially mutate your DNA in your eyes, causing cancer and other nasty things to happen. Hope this helps.

your eye depends on the retina; a film located on the back of your eye to observe light through rods and cones. Light entering these rods and cones trasnmit information through a system of nerve cells, which eventually lead to your brain, showing you what you "see." Intense rays are emitted by the sun, and even here on earth can have an impact. Therefore, when you stare at the sun for too long, your retina becomes damaged due to the high energy exposure, leading to loss of sight, either marginal or severe.
