Most would say the Battle of Verdun, fought between the French and the Germans on the Western Front from February into December, 1916, with the Germans attacking for six months and the French counterattacking the rest of the time. About 450,000 soldiers killed.

Someone else here said the Battle of the Bulge, but that only occurred in December 1944-January 1945, not September until February.

The Siege of Leningrad from 1941 to 1944 was famous as "The 900 Days," but it was not one continuous battle.

[edit] I'd like to comment on "The Battle of the Atlantic," the German u-boat (and some surface ships) effort to blockade Britain and prevent U.S. supplies and troops from reaching Europe during WWII. It's mentioned in several posts here.

This wasn't a "battle." It was a series of anti-shipping and anti-submarine CAMPAIGNS stretching from 1939 until the end of the war which reached a climax in 1943 with a decisive German defeat when the Nazi "Wolf Packs" were broken by improved Allied recon and convoy antisub defense. But it wasn't a battle in the sense that land battles in single locations are battles. It was vastly widespread, of very long duration, subject to many changes of strategy, and never directed toward a single specific goal.

The longest battles in history:

on the sea's it would be the Battle of the North Atlantic from September 1, 1939 when Great Britain and Germany declared war on each other and ran through May of 1945...almost 6 years! Britain instituted a naval blockade of Germany and Admiral Raeder of Germany decided not to take the Royal Navy head on, and used submarines (undersea boats - hence the "U" in U-boat) to interdict and sink ships headed to England from the U.S., The U Boats under the command of Admiral Donitz knew Britain and the Allies needed huge amounts of food, fuel and raw materials from overseas to sustain the war effort and if the U boats suceeded in denying them the needed material it would serve a 2 fold purpose, the 1st being the Allies being denied a vital base of operations for future air and land offensives against Germany and 2nd, the Germans could pour more resources into the front opened against Russia.

The largest land battle in history time wise would have to be the Battle of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War and ran from April 5, 1992 until February 29, 1996 between Bosnia and Serbian forces and the fighting pretty much oblierated the city that hosted the 1984 Winter Olympic game

The Battle of Verdun in WW1. 10 months

If a siege can be considered a battle (highly questionable) then some of them went on for years or even decades. The Siege of Candia in the 1600s went on for more than 20 years.

It's the battle of the buldge, Sept. of 1944 to Feb. 1945. It's where the 101st was surrounded at Bastogne and General Patton helped to break them out.
