I know what you mean, but does anyone really care about being British anyway? Other than on passports and for official reasons, people tend to refer to themselves as English, Scottish etc.
The first answerer is right, Ireland isn't part of Great Britain.

Just a convention of speech. In Cherokee, we call all of those "aniyonega," or light skinned people. There is no separate word for Welsh, English, Irish or Scottish, because to us they all looked alike. Interestingly enough, most Cherokee are also mixed with Irish or Scottish, but the word is still the same. We do have a word for a German person, "adatsi" and for French "agalvtsi," but the British Isles people are seen as one entity.

I would put money on the fact that if you asked Americans (in a hypothetical situation) what they thought about the Scottish or Welsh or (especially) the Irish trying to SEPARATE from England they would give full support. Call it ignorance, support or brotherly love they would give whatever they had....
Side note to the British---This is absolutely nothing personal, it is just the way Americans are, they fall head-over-heels to hear b.s stories of someone revolting from someone somewhere for whatever reason haha.

I can't speak for others but I don't call them 'English', I call them 'British' or I say they are from England. I say Scottish and Irish when applicable. I don't know any Welsh people but if I did, I'd say they were Welsh.

Scotland, Wales, England, and Ireland (with Man and some other places) are the British Isles. Scotland, Wales, and England are Great Britain. Scotland, Wales, England, and Northern Ireland are the United Kingdom.

We know the difference between English and the others, and no one here ever calls anyone a "Great Britain."
