Did you loose the power steering as well? If so it might be the belt tensioner. If that broke and/or got loose that would cause the alternator to stop charging the battery as well. Not that expensive either. Something to look at.

If the starter will turn the engine over, then it is not the alternator or battery as a previous answer suggested. It could be the fuel pump or maybe the fuel filter. Lots of other possibilities, especially on an older car.

What make/model car? Year? Can you give some engine codes?
Gas needs to get to your engine for it to work. So check you have good fuel pressure at the fuel rail... that's the plumbing that feeds gas to the individual fuel injectors. You need like 30-40psi there if it's not you have a problem with your fuel system.
if your fuel is good check you have spark. maybe you have an ignition problem i suspect it's fuel but make sure you have spark all the same.

employing on the expressway and your knee grew to become off the ignition? i assume your foot replaced into on the throttle? confident? So how tall are you and how small replaced into the motor vehicle? i'm able to visualize that perhaps going on to Yao Ming yet to no longer a guy of regular top. perhaps the knee of a guy 6' 5" tall employing a Mini Cooper would desire to bump the ignition change yet i do no longer anticipate that what you're saying you probably did is something that occurs lots. whether, in answer on your question, in case you turn the ignition change off at an RPM popular to highway speeds, i would not advise which you re-initiate it till the uncooked vaporized gas that went into your exhaust device has had a 2d or 2 to expend. Igniting the engine cylinders earlier it dissipates will ignite the uncooked vaporized gas in the exhaust device and the explosion of that would desire to blow your cat or muffler aside on the seams.

Your alternator is shot and must be replaced. The alternator makes power for your car to run everything that is electrical. It was probably trying to run off the battery but a battery will only run a car for so long.

Fuel problems usually don't happen like that...catalytic converters plugged DO happen like that. Suddenly the car slows down and no matter how much you push the pedal, it gets slower and slower.
I'd have someone competent check back pressure with a gage.

Sounds like the fuel pump died. A rarer possibility is comtaminated fuel on your recent fill-up.
