question:
write an equation in slope-intercept form of the line that passes through the points

Problem:
(-2,-1), (4,-4)

my work:
-2-4/-1-(-4)= -6/3=-2

y=mx+b
-1=-2*-2+b
-1=- 4+b
-5= b

answer:
y=-2x-5

Youve done (X2-X1)/(Y2-Y1)

It should be -4 - -1/4- -2

= -3/6

= -1/2 thro' (4,-4)

So -4 = -1/2 x 4 + b

- 4 = -2 + b

b = -2

So y = -1/2x - 2

You made a couple of mistakes:
1) To find the slope m, you're supposed to subtract the Ys in the numerator and the Xs in the denominator. So your slope should be:
m = (-1-(-4))/(-2-4) = -1/2

2)When solving for b, you subtracted 4 from both sides when you should have added. Using the correct m= -1/2, you should have:
y=mx+b
-1=(-1/2)*(-2)+b
-1=1+b
-2=b
The answer should read:
y = (-1/2)x - 2
You can check your answer by substituting the given points

You have it upside down. The slope is rise over run.

Or m = y1-y2 / x1-x2

Your coordinates are (-2 , -1) (4 , -4)
Solve for slope:

m= -1 - (-4) / -2 - 4
m= -1 + 4 / -6
m= 3/-6
m= -1/2

Now you have y= -1/2x + b
Solve for b by plugging your first x and y, which are -2 and -1.

-1 = -1/2 (-2) +b
-1 = 1 + b
-2 = b

Now you have y = -1/2x -2
Double check by plugging in your other coordinates, (4, -4).

-4 = -1/2 (4) -2
-4 = -2 -2
-4 = -4

So the equation y = -1/2 x -2 is the correct answer.

Slope Formula

m = y₂- y₁/ x₂- x₁

Ordered Pairs

(- 2, - 1)(4, - 4)

m = - 4 - (- 1) / 4 - (- 2)

m = - 4 + 1 / 4 + 2

m = - 3 / 6

m = - 1/2

- - - - -

y = mx + b

- 1 = - 1/2(- 2) + b

-1 = - 2 / - 2 + b

- 1 = 1 + b

- 1 - 1 = 1 + b - 1

- 2 = b

- - - - - - -

y = - 1/2x - 2

I think you have your points mixed up ( the x's and the y's)
Slope should be -1/2 Eq. is y=-1/2 - 2
