Which one? There are many kinds and most have there preferences for host plants. Monarchs are known to feed exclusively on milkweed and gain incorporate the toxins into their bodies. You can find most on plants/trees/shrubs , some are more conspicuous than others tent caterpillars (because of the tent) and some of the saturnids ( because of their sheer size), but considering there's over 12 000 species of moths and butterflies in North-America there is quite a bit of variety . But they aren't limited to terrestrial habitats as there are a few aquatic caterpillars believe it or not and you can find these by looking under stones in streams and rivers.

For instance, on cabbage leaves...when a 'cabbage white' butterfly had laid eggs a week or so earlier.

The caterpillar is the second stage in the insect's growth.

Different species lay eggs on different food plants. The eggs hatch out into tiny caterpillars and eat the food plant and then when mature enough move to the next stage.....

eventually they become insects and the cycle starts again....

Usually on the kind of plant it likes to eat leaves from. It could be a cabbage, a milkweed, an apple tree, or an evergreen. They all have their specific favorites and they are on that leafy buffet constantly to grow bigger.

Since Spring is coming on one might look on the undersides of flowers, plants, leaves, possibly trees. But be very careful because you might stumble across spiders, or wasps, bees, etc.

In the grass! Or around the woods... I can already tell you're not the outdoorsy type.
