you have norton, don't you? lol, norton is the slowest antivirus on the planet!!! lol download AVG, its free, and it works. I've been using it for a while now, and I havn't gotten my computer slowed down, and it blocks all the same stuff that Norton does.
Good Luck!

Unfortunately, some of the leading AV products are resource hogs, Norton being the leader in resource usage. Others use far less resources, but then you end up compromising a high virus.malware detection rate just to save some CPU cycles.
I would recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus. It can be had for free under the name "Active Virus Shield". Unlike others, it will provide the same level of protection, it not more, than Norton. Additionally, it gives you the opportunity to disable the on-access scanner, which is fine as long as you practice safe computing and use some common sense.
It can be found at www.activevirusshield.com

i always advise users that you should allow 256mb for security programs as part of your total system memory(ram)
so thats why i think that 1gb is the least you should be using these days on windows xp and vista(2gb recommended)
if your running a anti-virus like symatec norton anti-virus on a p.c with just 128mb ram your p.c would struggle to do even basic applications, norton recommends at least 512mb for its products although some systems shipped with just 256mb come with norton
however there are some excellent anti-virus software avalible which dont drain your memory and do a good job at protecting your computer
avast4.7 anti-virus(http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)is such a program, its free and comes with 7 real time scanners, and also includes a quick scanner for scanning individual files, users who file share like this program as it has a p2p(peer to peer)scanner
avast runs in demo mode for 60 days but can be registered free of charge to convert into a full home version
avast generally uses around 2 to 4 % of your system memory which aquates to around 20mb on a 1gb system
finally p.c,s will slow down if they have been infected by malware (virus)so if you do install avast,i would recommend you do a full scan to check for any infection
also spyware can slow down your p.c,particually your internet explorer so a scan with a spyware scanner would also be a good idea,spybot(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)is one of the best spyware scanners avalible, and also protects from future attack
i hope this helps
good luck

All anti viruses use memory as they protect your computer. As the other people said, norton uses a lot of memory and if you are scanning your computer and doing other things it will use even more memory.

takes up a lot of cpu power and if you have lots of files on your computer it can take forever
you might not have norton!! if so then stay clear1!
