Fuel door area received no damage before or after I popped it open with the release button so this is very puzzling for it to be ajar "out of the blue".

try spraying the "catch" with oil in case its seizing. another possiblity is that there is a rubber stopper that stops the door going in to far, you may just need to push that in a little. if so it turns just like a screw.

The release is stuck. push the button several times to get it to free its self.

A little lube couldn't hurt either.
