do you mean just the Franks or the nationality as a whole (Franks, France, Napoleonic France, etc.)

It began with Clovis, who ruled from 481-511. He became supreme in the area after his conversion to catholicism in 496, for political reasons of course. It ended with the grandfather of Charlemagne, Pepin, who ended the Merovingian dynasty and replaced it with his, the Carolingian dynasty.
