I think it would depend on what you're planning on using the drive for. For playing DVD's and CD's, there shouldn't be a problem. I know people who have used their P3's (approx. the same as yours, I think) to burn DVD's, but that was back in the 4X days of $200+ burners.

If you're planning on "ripping" and burning DVD's you might encounter problems with the CPU overheating (My CPU, a 3.2 gHz Pentium 4, socket 775 heats up a bit when I use DVD-Shrink. That machine has 2GB of matched memory. My other computers' CPU's also exhibit this behavior - I have 7, all with P4's, all above 2.8 gHz, all with a minimum of 1GB of memory). But, P4's are supposed to be thermally protected - they shut down internally when they hit a pre-set temperature.

I think where you will have a problem is in "burning" DVD's at higher speeds. You should check the DVD's transfer speed over the IDE-channel and make sure it's in DMA-mode (My Computer> view system information> Hardware> Device Manager> IDE Controllers> (then whatever channel you have the drive on)) If it's on PIO, the CPU will be working overtime.

DVD's you burn may have problems because of bottle-necking through the CPU to the buffers (RAM or drive).

So, keep an eye on the temperature (or an ear on the fan speed - if you have variable fan speed control on the motherboard) and watch your burning speed (try lower speeds if the DVD's you're getting have problems).

Oh, and don't multi-task if you're burning discs (DVD's and probably CD's).

Your CD-Rom may work fine, but for the BEST results you should use reccomended parts, but if it works fine now, no harm will be done.
