you dont have to but you must know what your doing. you can do what known as speed shifting(matching the gear ratio with rpms and speed in the proper gear) but if you dont do it right you will eat up your clutch sincranisers(whatever) flywheel . so if your just taking out of gear bring your rpms up slightly till it falls out of gear. speed shifting is a good tool if you lose a clutch it is a way to get home to fix it

It's not a must, but it's kind to the syncros in the transmission.

but just don't let the clutch police catch you doing it.. they're real MOFO's.
