Americans, did you know:
British politics are not the same as American when it comes to terminology....
There are some strange people on here who spit the term liberal as if it's the biggest insult heard to man!
I dont like the war in Iraq, but when I get called a "liberal cry baby"...do they not realise in the UK that means nothing?
In the UK we have:
Conservative
"New" labour
Liberal democrats (not to be confused with your liberal parties)
Green party
UK Independance party
Socialist workers party
British national party
to name but a few!! the rest are listed here:
http://bubl.ac.uk/uk/parties.htm
think on when calling a non-american "liberal" like it's dirty!! it may be an insult to you but it means nothing to the rest of the world!

so liberal means socialist? why not say that then?
my question was a simple one, asking why the term gets used to aggressivley, so why do some people get so angry when they answer? maybe they shopuld join the army and die in Iraq (practice what they preach) instead of calling strangers socialist and raising their blood pressure for no reason!!

No. Here, some people associate "liberalism" as the most evil concept our nation has ever produced. Unfortunately, many just are plain ignorant and undereducated simpletons--not realizing that the root word of liberal, means "liberty", and "freedom".
Dollars to doughnuts, there are those who are stringent in their beliefs that curtailing the freedoms of others will somehow "strengthen" our nation as a whole.
Especially in times of crisis.
It's a sad state of affairs in a nation originally born of liberty and democracy.

Liberal is just a philosophy - not a party. Typically, liberals are Democrats and conservatives are Republican. Being called liberal is not an insult - conservatives (Republicans) just turn it into a insult as a political tool to make liberals look bad. Liberal here and in the UK means pretty much the same thing, there's just a lot of Republicans here who hate liberals and use it as an insult because they don't have anything intelligent to say.
NOTE: Liberal certainly does not mean socialist. Some Conservatives in here are whackjobs who spout crap. It just means that they're liberal on social issues.

I'm glad you mentioned it. They just don't listen. Liberal, as used in the US is the wrong usage and has no real connection to the dictionary definition.
The "Conservatives" there have twisted a decent term for immoral purposes and this just makes outsiders like us think that they are actually thicker than they really are.
It is a wonder if they do know that old die hard communists in Russia or the Revolutionary guards in Iran are conservatives too.

Okay so you guys got alot more parties to go to than us twin bulbed two horned dim wits here in America.
It would seem the Democratic party at the moment doesn't mind the problem the Repubs have with US Constutition when it comes our liberties found in the bill of rights..
So the Dems let the repubs sound off in ignorance as it should be in a free democracy.

A note to the Americans on this board. Yahoo Answers is linked to Yahoo! UK and people in the UK don't have to go into any US site to access it. I don't wanna call you "dumb", but if the shoe fits...!
On the subject of "liberals" v "conservatives", here's a test. Which American politician:
- Believed in UFOs and alien visitors to Earth, and even went on Larry King to say so
- Called Ronald Reagan's foreign policy "dumb"
- Constantly bad-mouthed the religious right (Jerry Falwell, Pat Buchanan, et al) and referred to them as "traitors to America"
- Was in favor of gays in the military
- Was always outspokenly pro-choice
- Had a (complimentary) song written about him by Bob Dylan
- Called Richard Nixon "the most dishonest person I've ever met"?
The answer: Barry Goldwater.

Well, does it really matter since you guys are now under EU control? Identities don't really seem to matter under despotism dear. By the way when are you guys going to kick that crap to the curb? The reason i ask this is because we too are being moved into a similar(exactly the same actually) with the NAU(i.e. North American Union). Australia as well as most(if not all) will be implemented into the APU (i.e.Asia Pacific Union).

Well then I guess the meaning of the word "Liberal" in your country is quit different than in our country.. And if you come on here acting like what we call a Liberal then that's what you will be labeled..and with you posting this question it must get under your skin or you would have no need to post such a question. DUH!!!
Isn't that what your doing, trying to raise peoples blood pressure for no reason? And just because people are over in Iraq fighting don't mean they are all dying, how unsympathetic and digusting to think of soldiers dying over there.. You have one sick mind lady, and I hope you sleep good at night dreaming of our military dying. Go have your cup of tea and crumpet and paint a picture or something. Stop being jealous of us Americans.

People are saying "There is no 'Liberal party.'" That is true, but Conservatives use it like it is. "You dont like the war: You're just a stupid liberal, go ride the global warming train with your liberal friends and vote for Gore and watch America be destroyed." Implying that anyone who votes for Gore is Liberal, thus, Democrats=Liberals. Right?

Republicans are not the brightest bulbs on the trees here in the US of A,,,, the #1 female artist group,, member of "The Dixie Chicks",,, Natalie Maines,, said it best,,, we Americans are ashamed of our president and his GOP,, Bush is a Texas bread "good ole boy",,, but our Democratic party and the majority of the people are working very hard to IMPEACH Bush-Cheney and run all the rest of his cabinet back down to Texas,, not that they deserve them,, but Rove, Gonzales,, and a few others probably won't be able to live in any other state,, their likely to be shot somewhere they won't be buried,,

There is no Liberal Party in the United States, either. Liberalism is the political philosophy of the left. It is not isolated in any one party. In your country, Labour (especially of te old variety) would be the prime proponent thereof. It's about cradle-to-grave welfare, a victim society, and no personal responsibility.
