I've just downloaded a large video file and its in several different sections called 'rar' files. I usually avoid these type of downloads as i have no idea what to do with them. i usually only deal with AVI's etc wich can be viewed straight away.
I really want this video file though and it's the only way to get it.
So what do i do now? Do i need a special reader or convertor?
Any help gratefully appreciated. Thanx.

Download and install winrar, then you just need to find the first file (typically you get a bunch of files one is .rar and the rest are like .r01, .r02 etc) the quickest thing is to right click the .rar and pick extract here, it will then extract the file out of all the smaller files and rebuild it into one big one. You can also just open the .rar and decompress it wherever you want, winrar automatically does all the files and puts them back together. Its basically like a zip file but you can break them up and it knows to put them back together.

Rar is nothing but a compressed file, pretty much like zip files, if you know that.

Compressing a file decreases its size, and splitting up the file helps in downloading. If your download is interrupted, it doesn't need to redownload the whole thing, just the last few parts.

Get WinRAR, install it and open the FIRST rar file, it'll then extract the main video file from all of them.

Quickpar will also be useful - it can repair damaged or incomplete RAR files. For very large downloads this is quite important. It needs the .PAR2 files - which are usually provided in the same thread sequence as the main usenet programme posts.
