what do you think the best phish album is? i was about to buy one, but i didn't know which one to choose. thanks

My first Phish album was "A Picture of Nectar" and it is still my favorite, but "Rift" and "Hoist" are also great. Time enough to delve into the deeper stuff later.
Phish's best work is live!! Check out NYE 1995, or virtually any of the "live Phish" stuff in your local independent music store

Although the albums really don't stack up at all to the live show, Picture of Nectar is by far their most well rounded album. It is a mixture of jazz-rock, folkier stuff, hard rock, and progressive elements. It is the perfect blend for someone that is getting started.
If you are going to get into the live show, you should buy Junta. That is their first album and contains many of the composed pieces that are so famous live, i.e Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself.

As far as studio albums go, my faves are the super-funky "Story of the Ghost" and the Rocking "Farmhouse" although seriously I strongly recommend buying them all. I think I started with "Hoist" then worked my way backward (that was the most current at the time).
As far as live ones go, pick one, you can't go wrong!!!

My personal favorite is "The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday". But they are all good.
