I was on newegg looking for hard drives and it seems that so many of them either arrive dead or die soon after being purchased. Is this normal for so many hard drives to die like that or is it Newegg's fault? Thanks.

I never ordered a HD from NewEgg. I have gotten a number of CD and DVD-drives (maybe 7 or 8) from them and never had a problem with DOA. I did return one DVD-drive recently, but I think it was because it was a bad model (the manufacturer stopped making the model before I RMA'ed it).

I did have the postman drop a package right in front of me which contained a DVD-drive. Fortunately, it was a "part"s drive so I didn't have to worry about it. So I'd think that shipping is a good possibility for where the problem lies.

I have bought maybe 2-dozen HD's in the last 4-years. I never had a problem even though I've seen people dropping them inside the Fry's Electronics store I usually buy mine at. Oh, I usually get Seagate HD's because of the 5-year warranty. I did buy Western Digitals until they dropped their warranty to 1-year. (though the "Raptor"-series has a 5-year warranty, too, which is one reason I'd consider buying a 10K drive). I have bought Maxtor and Fujitsu because of pricing and haven't had any problems, yet, either.

It's not Neweggs fault. The big three hard drive makers have been having alot of early life failures of late for some reason. I stopped buying those and go for Samsung.

Well, most harddrives are very reliable. Is this an internal or external and who made them. It your system doesn't like a particular brand (I have seen that) then try a different manufacturers drive. (If you have been getting Western Digital try a Fujitsu, or Segate etc)
If ones you are getting from Newegg seem to be the issue order from Tiger Direct or off Pricewatch etc.

Hmm....could be a shipping thing? Not sure, but just to make sure..... You're not trying to install Vista on them are you? DON'T!!! I did that to mine and now I don't ever turn that computer on. I'm suprised Vista doesn't ask me, "Are you sure you want to turn the computer on?" YES or NO. You chose YES, "Are you really sure you want to turn the computer on?" YES or NO. "The computer is being turned on, is this okay?" ARRRRRRRRRGHHHHHH
