I don't think it was all about jealousy even though there may have been a little bit of that hidden in there. I don't feel they had any respect for black people and hardly saw them as human, more as 'creatures'. I think they wanted the big strong black people to do all the labor for free, not much more than that. Maybe the fat little white guy in the plantation house was jealous that his slaves were in better physical shape but I don't think jealousy was the reason behind keeping them in the first place! They honestly believed the black people were stupid savages since they didn't speak English or follow those customs. I do think that those slave owners feared them though and knew that the slaves were capable of much more. It was a crime to teach slaves to read because they wanted to keep them dumb so they couldn't 'out smart' the Master. It's probably why they were treated so badly (whippings, etc.) , the slave masters were afraid and needed to try to scare the slaves into submission. It was probably very frightening to own slaves back then. You treat someone like crap for years and beat them constantly and see that they still have the will to live, it shows how strong the person really is. You would have to know that you were in over your head and the only way to 'control' them would be with ridiculous and brutal punishment.

No. It was in history books. It wasnt just white men. You think its just white man because we're in America and slavery was part of our history. Plus America was one of the last large countries to abolish slavery over the past few centuries, so the memory is recent. Mostly all societies did this to other groups for different reasons: 1) their religion made them feel superior to others (like in the Bible, the non-Christians were deemed inferior because they werent children of God) so the European, Christian man took this seriously and hard, plus having different cultures and languages helped it on; 2) greed; 3) cheap labor which ties to the inferior, superior thing (if you didnt think a person was a person, you treat them like an object and use them); and 4) their advanced weapons and military strategies coupled with their alliance with large, powerful nations.

Mainly, its how they were taught. Im just glad we are taught to be more open and compassionate for all (humans, animals, environment). It shows how much we have grown as humans.

working hard and building wealth for themselves they were

just insecure people who blame black people for all their

problems in the world. In other words they had to step on

someone to make themselves look good. This is what

middle class america does today because they cant handle

their own financial siuations. The difference is now both black

and white middle class americans are blaming each other

while the rich are getting richer. So instead of taking control
