morality is not the same is legality. the fact that abortion is legal/illegal has nothing to do with it being right/wrong.
this argument can never be resolved, because there is a lot to say both for and against it.
in your essay you could try to research both sides of the question and come up with your own conclusion as to which side has a better argument.
try wikipedia, and look at the recent news, abortion has been an ongoing debate for a while, so you'll definitely find something interesting

I disagree with misskate who invokes medical practice as a reason why abortion should be legal. It's not primarily a medical issue..... like euthanasia it's an ethical issue.
While i understand that in certain instances abortion is the best option, like everything else it can be abused. I don't understand how it comes to pass that some women have multiple abortions.
I think that education is the key to reducing the amount of abortions done, and that it needs to continue to be closely monitored lest it become viewed as another method of birth control.
I personally am generally against abortion because it is often used by irresponsible people to fix a problem that could easily have been avoided. Few people mention the physical and mental scarring that comes with abortion.
When it comes to the question of "rights" that is so often brought up in discussions about abortion, it seems to me that there is always alot of talk about the mother's rights, and very little about the rights of the unborn human being. Everyone seems to overlook that the mother had the right to use effective birth control, and had the right to keep her legs closed. In many cases the practice of these rights would eliminate the need for abortion.

As a guy who knows several people who have had abortions I think unwanted pregnancy- even for a married couple poses a serious moral dilemma which should not be treated trivially. That some do is shameful but irrelevant. these are personal tragedies that do not lend themselves to government interference. i also feel that our legal system derives from English Common Law and not the Bible, and that our "rights" evolve from the Magna Carta. We have a right to privacy and reproduction is one of the most private activities I can think of.

I don't think anyone in the world is "for" abortion, but if it is illegal, then women who don't want to be pregnant (all arguements aside about why she is pregnant) WILL find a way. In the 1960's, women stuck old wire coat hangers up... to cause an abort, so should we provide a service so THEY will live, if not the baby? Other methods are equally dangerous-black cohosh, pennyroyal tea, e.t.c. The only low risk way to abort a foetus is on a medical table. The question is, should we provide it?

If a woman used birth control and the birth control failed and she got pregnant anyway, she should have the right to end the pregnancy through abortion.
Look at it this way: if you locked your doors and had an alarm system, but somebody got past that stuff and broke in anyway, wouldn't you be angry if someone told you to allow that person to move into your house, eat all your food, and not pay any rent?
Same principle. If it's in my body after I took precautions to prevent that, I have the right to evict it.
If I was forced to stay pregnant, I would never give up the kid for adoption to a conservative or Christian family. I'd prefer to give it to a gay couple, but if that wasn't possible, I'd look for the most liberal person I could find, and definitely a non-Christian. Nobody's going to make me a brood mare for infertile right-wingers.

I believe that it should be illegal, unless the mother would be put in mortal danger or killed by the birth/pregnancy. I see the baby as a human, and it should only be terminated as a last resort, in self defense. The mother should not be forced to do this, however, especially if there is a chance that the baby would survive anyway. Rape, and things are other things to consider, though, I'm not sure how to handle that. Women should be more careful if they aren't ready for children.
Good Luck!!!

Guys should not have any say so for or against abortion, although the majority of the guys probably will not want to be obligated to pay child support for the next 18 or 24 years if the child decides to go to college.

I don't think GUYS should have a say..as the old protest song goes:
2-4-6-8
who's the ones who ovulate
not the church
not the state
let the women control their fate
