I've just installed ubuntu 6.10 and I cant play .avi files what do I need to do to play all media files?

You need to wipe Ubuntu and install PCLinuxOS

PCLinux runs a much wider range of media files than Ubuntu either out of the box or with an effortless package download from the repo.

You need to install the proper codecs, follow #10 in this tutorial, it will enable you to play most files.
