Ichiro or Jeter?

I would take Ichiro! He is in a contract year looking for the big money (which hopefully he will get from the Mariners) and is overall a better all-around player.

To start defensively, you would have to say Ichiro is much more valuable defensively than Jeter. Ichiro is so quick he can track balls down into the gaps with ease. Now that he will be playing Center Field he will be even more of an asset on defense. He can cause runners to stay at second base instead of trying to advance to third because of his rocket arm. His arm is SO GOOD that he can throw a curveball from center field to home plate (almost). The M's were filming one of their commercials where Ichiro would throw a curveball from CF and he almost made it on his first try. He ended up bouncing it just in front of the plate. Check out the commercial at seattlemariners.com.

As for Jeter defnesively he is good but not great. He can make some nice plays but does not affect the game as much as Ichiro would on defense.

Offensively Ichiro is the best leadoff hitter in baseball. He is a career .331 hitter with 206+ hits in each of his first 6 seasons, including 262 in 2004. Put that together with 101+ runs in each of his 6 seasons and 31 or more SBs in those 6 seasons. Those stats would be evidence that Ichiro is a better hitter than Jeter (even though he doesn't hit for tremendous power, but neither does Jeter.)

I might also throw in the fact that Ichiro's care Fielding % is .994. Amazing He has a total of 14 errors in 8,182 innings.

So to answer your question, I would rather have Ichiro on my team (which he is GO Mariners!)

The way you asked the question is different from the answers I think you were expecting.

All things equal I think I would take Jeter over Ichiro on the idea that you build up the middle and that a shortstop who is as excellent offensively and not bad defensively (like Jeter) is a hard thing to come by.

(I do think Ichiro can be a power hitter - just that he chooses not to be, and with good reason.)

But for the Indians - ie "my team" - Ichiro would be a much better fit. Not because Jhonny Peralta is that good of a shortstop (the book is still out) but because Ichiro would fit a more pressing need - a RF/leadoff hitter who could allow Grady Sizemore to move to a run producing position.

So to answer your question - if I were building a team from scratch it would be Jeter without any question. But if I were GM of the Indians then it would have to be Ichiro.

I would have to go with Ichiro. I do like Jeter, people dont give him credit. Everyone says he is over-rated but he is just good season after season... He comes alive in the play-offs unlike his buddy A-Rod... But with that being said, Ichiro is a special player, if he actually was on a team like the Cubs, Red Sox or Yankees where someone is driving him in every time he gets on base he would have 200 runs a season...

Both are superior offensive players, but Derek Jeter offers more in the way of extra base power. Ichiro Suzuki is a great defensive player but not so much better he would overcome Mr. Jeter. I'll take #2.

Jeter because he can hit for power if need be (20 hr is not an impossibility for him)) and he definitely can hit for average and is a pretty good defensive shortstop. Although I would mind having Ichiro on my team .
