myself and my husband are currently on tax credits, my husband receives working tax credits and i child tax credits, we are still needing more money to put towards bills, i would like to get a night time job over the weekend but i am worried it will effect the amount of tax credits we receive, does anyone know how many hours you can work and how much money you can earn before your tax credits are effected.

Anything extra you earn will raise your yearly salary on which your tax credits are based. it may not show just yet, even when you tell them about the change of circumstances, but it will at the year end (or next time they do an assessment) cos the years payments are based on the full years earnings. There is no cut and dried 'you can earn x amount' sorry. Its the most ridiculous complicated scheme ever invented. i owe them £500 for not telling them I started work!! But before I started I wasnt even claiming. Whatever you do, tell them about any changes straight away, keep all your wage slips, p60s and award notices, for future reference and keep a note of the times you contact them and the dates.

Look at the paperwork from the Tax Credit people. It tells you what you can earn to not affect your claim

The whole point about tax credits is to encourage people to work, so if you need more money then I expect you will be better off if you work more.

Even so, you could try putting the various different scenarios in here:

Since your credits are coming out of others' taxes, I'd have to suggest that you should both work as much as you possibly can and use that money in place of the credits.

This is determined by total income and total credits.
