Hacker is a term applied often to computer software or computer hardware programmers, designers and administrators, and especially those who are perceived as experts or highly accomplished. A hacker is also someone who modifies electronics, for example, ham radio transceivers, printers or even home sprinkler systems for extra functionality or performance. The term usually bears strong connotations, but may be either favorable or denigrating depending on cultural context (see the hacker definition controversy).

In computer programming, a hacker is a software designer and programmer who builds programs and systems that garner the respect of one's peers. A hacker can also be a programmer who hacks or reaches a goal by employing a series of modifications to exploit or extend existing code or resources. For some, "hacker" has a negative connotation and refers to a person who "hacks" or uses kludges to accomplish programming tasks that are ugly, inelegant, and inefficient. This pejorative form of the noun "hack" is even used among users of the positive sense of "hacker" (some argue that it should not be due to this pejorative meaning, but others argue that some kludges can, for all their ugliness and imperfection, still have "hack value").
In computer security, a hacker is a person who specializes in work with the security mechanisms for computer and network systems. While including those who endeavor to strengthen such mechanisms, it is more often used by the mass media and popular culture to refer to those who seek access despite them.
In other technical fields, hacker is extended to mean a person who makes things work beyond perceived limits through their own technical skill, such as a hardware hacker, or reality hacker.
In hacker culture, a hacker is a person who has attained the respect of one's peers.

"Hackers are the elite corps of computer designers and programmers. They like to see themselves as the wizards and warriors of tech. Designing software and inventing algorithms can involve bravura intellection, and tinkering with them is as much fun as fiddling with engines. Hackers have their own culture, their own language. And in the off-hours, they can turn their ingenuity to sparring with enemies on the Nets, or to the midnight stroll through systems you should not be able to enter, were you not so very clever. Dark-side hackers, or crackers, slip into systems for the smash-and-grab, but most hackers are in it for the virtuoso ingress.

It's a high-stress life, but it can be amazing fun. Imagine being paid - well paid - to play forever with the toys you love. Imagine."

There are mainly depressed people who want to see others suffer ....they personally are lonely and do not have much of a life. Just bash your hacker and dont worry about it. Mac machines are the best in terms of security and do not announce your ip address on the internet. Guys remember its just trash...that's all it is...

To put it simply, Hackers are computer geeks who break into your computer or a network of computer to either steal sensitive information or just to cause havok.

Some make money from hacking like stealing people's credit card numbers. Some do it just to be mean and to be 'famous'.

Oh, some actually work for large corporations like banks as consultants to help them fight against other hackers.

If you really want to know 'Hackers' by Steven Levy is excellent. It talks about the Hacker Ethic, something rarely mentioned now, about the intellectual and technical challenge that motivated them and the incredible things they achieved. Nowadays, sadly, it has links to organised crime and fraud, but it never used to be like that.

They are computer geeks that are smart enough to get in on some computers if there isn't a firewall. They may be paid, but unless you are a business, I doubt it. They are usually kids just trying everything they can to mess up things.
