what does indie music mean?

if you look on myspace music it says major indie ect.. so what is indie :s

indie means independent which means that they have no record label and produce their music themselves
when myspace says major indie it just means that they're very popular

Indie music is a short form for Independent music. These bands are not signed on major record labels, or produce the cds themselves with no help from a label.

Maybe it refers to Hindi or Indian music!
