Yes. Shutting down your computer by holding the power button or pressing the reset buttons is in the computer world, a no-no. It can cause damage to system files, any files you may have open for yourself, and also cause damage to your memory. You may have noticed a 'scandisk' running on your next start-up due to 'improper shutdown'. I have actually had computers fail to boot continuously because people have done that so many times that a lot of their system files were corrupted. Always use the shutdown option to shut-down your computer. The hard shutdown option (holding the power button down) is a last resort for when your computer locks-up so bad that you are unable to use the shut-down option. Always, ALWAYS try CTRL+ALT+DEL, then click shut-down to shutdown your computer BEFORE holding the button. You always want to shut-down your computer properly to prevent any damage being done. If you cause enough damage then you may have to reformat and install windows which takes about 2-4 hours depending on your experience and operating system.

Yes it can cause damage and usually if this did arise it would be drivers problem that occurs. If you have no option because the system has hung then it is best to hit the reset button first (if you have one) and if that doesn't work then holding the power button is the next best option and if that doesn't work then turning the power of at the back is last option. The last option should never be done (unless absolutely necessary ie none of the above works) as this could cause both hardware or software problems.

You shouldn't do that as you cut the power too abruptly and will cause errors in the hard drive and other hardware. You need to shut it down using the Start menu so that it can properly log out of the account it is on and properly shut down all the components.

Hi. A controlled shutdown through "Start" is preferable. Your PC will try to check for errors if you just power it off. No harm done.

No damage will be done, although you will lose anything that you had been working on.
