It seems that all humans dream but dreams are easily forgotten.
During a typical night a sleeper passes through different levels of sleep in a cyclic fashion between 5 and 7 times. Level 1 and 2 are light sleep characterised by irregular EEG patterns. Level 3 and 4 are deeper levels and are characterised by regular wave patterns. Stage 4 is called slow wave sleep or deep sleep. After stage 4 the sleeper goes back up the ‘sleep staircase’ to stage 2 and there is a period of REM sleep lasting for about 15 to 20 minutes. These sleep states alternate during the night starting with a rapid descent into deep sleep, followed by progressively increased episodes of lighter sleep and REM sleep.
During REM sleep, a person has a dream..which lasts between 15 - 20 minutes.
If someone is woken up during REM sleep, they are being woken up from their dream, and so they will remember it. Everyone has approx between 5-7 dreams every night, but only ever remember 2 or sometimes 3.

I always remember my dreams more vividly if I was too hot whilst sleeping. Perhaps you could experiment with temperature? Having a cat sleeping on your head seems to do the trick...

Everyone dreams...
However, only a small percentage of people regularily remember dreams.
As for nightmares...yes, we all have them too. It can sometimes be as simple as waking up with a deep fear.

keep a notebook and pen next to your bed and if you remember them as soon as you open your eyes when you wake up (when they are still fresh in your mind), write them down. i remember mine for a while but then i forget. but i have some that really affect me for the day or longer.
