envy me, if you are saying that jordan's championships don't prove much than you are the biggest idiot walking the face of the planet

edit: quinidine you make a good point but people like to debate this issue, so for the sake of argument all we can do is make comparisons of players' statistics and try to make up the differences in competition and era

I agree go Michael he also holds records for scoring 45 points at age 40 and 39. What NBA player in history has been able to do that? most 40 year old player have trouble running down the court let alone score 45 points in a game. He is the greatest now and ever and he would of won 9 titles if it hadn't been for his try at baseball.

He is also the best at making player better around him. He made great players out of Tony Kukoc and Steve Kerr plus look at how bad Scottie and the Bulls sucked while Jordan was gone.

First of all - anyone who has ever seen Jordan play knows he's much better than Kobe. Kobe's great - but may not even be the best player /now/, let's not even think about "best all-time" until he's finished.
Second - last I checked, Ali was a boxer, not a basketball player. To compare the two would be almost impossible. They both were the top of their sport and knew how to play the media.
Third - Wilt? Great player. I'll give you that. But it takes more than offense to determine who's the best. Jordan was an absolutely terrific defensive player and knew how to get his team involved. All-around, Jordan is still better than Wilt (though not by much!)
Fourth - how many other teams were built around a Shooting Guard and dominated like he did? None. All the other dynasties were built around Centers. Jordan did not have a Center to go to. To do what he did from his position - unbelievable.

Yes, there are other great players. But Jordan is still the best to have played.

Michael Jordan and Wilt comes in at a very close second. Kobe is great too and I'm a huge fan of his but it's too early to know. He's only 28 and we'll have to wait until he retires. When Kobe has 6 rings, 5 MVPs, 30,000 plus points, etc, then maybe we can start comparing them. MJ also has better career per game averages and was a better defender than Kobe.

MJ, MJ, MJ, MJ anymore questions, like someone else said Kobe isn't even the best in the game right now. Kobe can score period, that's it he has no all around game. All around the best player in the league right now is Steve Nash. Wilt was a great player, but at his height and the era he played in anyone could have been.

there's no right answer to this question. it's purely subjective and there are no scientific ways to measure one's greatness. statistically, it's easy to say MJ is the greatest. but what if you put Kobe, Lebron, or D-Wade up against MJ at his prime? I think either one of them can easily outduel MJ. Kobe is a better shooter, Lebron is stronger, and D-Wade is much quicker. Wilt, Kareem, even Mikan were all considered the greatest at one point. These statistics are not that significant. 2 Olympic Gold? Come on, they played against countries that just started playing basketball for a few months.

wiltchamberlin He was basketball's unstoppable force, the most awesome offensive force the game has ever seen. Asked to name the greatest players ever to play basketball, most fans and aficionados would put Wilt Chamberlain at or near the top of the list. Dominating the game as few players in any sport ever have, Chamberlain seemed capable of scoring and rebounding at will, despite the double- and triple-teams and constant fouling tactics that opposing teams used to try to shut him down.
