-- I have read the Odyssey.

-- I cannot say it is my favourite book, but I really enjoyed it just for the sake of its age. I know it must have been altered greatly through the years, but the idea of reading a poem composed so long ago is thrilling to me nevertheless.

-- I think it took me about two weeks. I read it piece by piece every day. I see you've capitalised this question, but don't be intimidated by the length of the piece. You will be amazed at how smoothly it goes through many parts.

-- Hmm...I had two favourite characters. One is Athena because I enjoyed the parts she disguised herself as Mentor and traveled with the boy, the other is Kirke. She amused me, turning Odysseus' men into swine, charming the captain into staying with her..such a b****, don't you think? But I liked that. Especially when you contrast Kirke to Penelope you will see what I mean. Penelope stays home and cries and weaves, a passive housewife, whereas Kirke is active and does as she wishes. She's a femme fatale, not a woman who will be ruled by the men.

-- To find out what value was important to me here, we shall first look at what value there is in the Odyssey: Faith, for once- but faith on the side of the wives and the servants and the soldiers, not the hero. Homer also hails courage- even deadly, stupid courage-which Odysseus has in abundance. Really, the man takes any risk you can think of, and we're supposed to think that he is the greatest. On the other hand, cleverness is also important in the poem. It is usually that which saves Odysseus in the end, and also Penelope from the suitors. None of these matter to me that much- what I think is still relevant and important is the importance given to guests and hostship in the poem. Everywhere Odysseus and Telemakhos go, the way they are treated is described in extreme detail, and also the way they treat their hosts. The guest-host relationship has a major part.

1. Yes I have, a couple times
2. Yes I did, in most places
3. It took me less than a week to read, but then I wasn't reading every day, and also I was reading the original full-length one, not the one that has been edited and included in many high school textbooks. (they didn't tell you that they edited it? oh dear, they want to keep your mind pure and all of the fun stuff away from you ... but it's too late, now you know)
4. My favorite part was the lotus eaters and also who can not love the cyclops? It showed great wisdom and arrogance to get away from them, but that is the fun of it. As for the lotus eaters, it's all about drugs, addiction, the affect of drugs on us today, and of course, aphrodisiacs.
5. It is an epic, of the challenges that a man can go through to find the woman who is his love. It is the story of perseverance and of focus, of a person sticking with one goal until he has accomplished it. Everything thing he goes through, metaphorically, if we read a full length version, are things that we go through and that can keep us from our goals.
