your best bet is to take it a dry cleaners. they have special spotting agents that they use and also have machines large enough to handle the comforter

I wash my down comforter and pillows in my front loading washing machine and then put it in the dryer. To get rid of the smell I would find an enzyme cleaner that naturally remove the stain. I use the same stuff that I put in my hot tub. It is from a brand called Leisure time and the product is called Enzyme. You can get it at any pool or hot tub store. It is great for the laundry. I especially use it to remove the oil stains on shirt from greasy food that you don't realize is there until after you dry it!

Take the comforter to the laundromat and use the triple washer. Either spray the comforter with vinegar to neutralize the smell or add it to the wash water with your detergent; it will also make the down smell fresh. Dry on low/medium heat in the triple dryer - throw in a pair of clean white tennis shoes to 'fluff' the down.

How can I spot clean the fabric?

To spot clean the fabric of the comforter, first move all the down from the section of fabric you wish to clean. Do not get any of the down wet.

Use a mild soap or spot remover to gently rub or dab the soiled fabric. Be careful not to damage the fabric by scrubbing or rubbing harshly.

Rinse with water. Dry the spot by hand with a hairdryer. Insure that the fabric is completely dry by fluffing it in the dryer. Not drying the fabric and down thoroughly will result in mildew.

I throw ours in the wash and it comes out just fine. Wash it by itself and dry on low heat.
