I've always heard it with a hard I, like why-alst. But one could argue that as long as understanding is passed along, language technically succeeds, therefore the 'right' answer exists only in the mind of the person you're speaking to and could, in theory, be different for anyone.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition, the word can be pronounced two ways: hwilst and whilst. In either case a long i sound is pronounced. It is not correct to pronounce the word with a short i sound.

Hello,
I am very good iIn english and reading. I have had a college readiong level since third grade. So I will put this in easy understandable labguage.
It will sound like white without the te, then the lst in whilst will sound like list.
I hope I was helpful!

It's not pronounced "while-st", it's as the 3rd post said "will-st".
