The Boston Massacre occured on March 5, 1770 . British soldiers were quartered in Boston . The colonials were not happy with the British occupation. There was snow on the ground and presumably some of the colonials threw them at the British soldiers and thought they were being attacked so they opened fore and killed four of them including Crispus Attucks, the first casualty of the crisis and who was anAfrican-American. Samuel Adams defended the Britishsoldiers in a court of law and the soldiers were found innocent due to self-defense at the hands of an impartial trial by jury.

The Boston Massacre was an attack on colonist civilians by British troops on March 5, 1770 and its legal aftermath, which helped spark the American Revolutionary War. Colonists were already resenting the Townsend Acts. Tensions caused by the heavy military presence in Boston led to brawls between soldiers and civilians, and eventually to troops shooting their muskets into a rioting crowd.

The Boston Massacre is also used colloquially to describe portions of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

(March 5, 1770), skirmish between British troops and a crowd in Boston, Mass., U.S. Widely publicized, it contributed to the unpopularity of the British regime in America in the years before the American Revolution. The incident was the climax of a series of brawls in which local workers and sailors clashed with British soldiers quartered in Boston. Harassed by a mob, the troops opened fire. Crispus Attucks, a black sailor and former slave, was shot first and died along with four others. Samuel Adams, a skillful propagandist of the day, shrewdly depicted the affair as a battle for American liberty.
