I reccomend Charles De Lint: He writes some excellent urban, alternative fantasy. Books by him, I'd reccomend, include Dreams Underfoot, and Memory and Dream.

Look into Andre Norton, Clifford Simak, early Robert Heinlein for starters. Norton does a lot of fantasy/sci-fi, Simak is pleasant and a little more adult oriented, and Heinlein is more theory oriented sci-fi. His "Glory Road" is one of my favorites.
